WW II and Korean War Veterans are dying at a rate of 1300 per day. Many communities are unable to provide military rites to our deceased veterans due to the reduced membership in services organizations such as the American Legion and VFW. Many families are now receiving a folded flag and taps recorded by a CD player.
As a funeral director and a veteran, William L. Cotter knew that something had to be done about the decreasing number of veterans that were able to provide military rites. What was needed was a group in the community that never aged. A program was launched that selected high school honor roll students that are direct descendents of veterans. Selection and training of the students in all aspects of military service takes only a few sessions and the practices are enjoyable.

After sending a news article about the Honor Guard, to the National Funeral Directors Association, Bill Cotter was invited by the Department of Defense to the Military Funeral Honor Executive Roundtable discussion on November 17, 1998. As a result of the roundtable discussion, the current Military Funeral Honors kit was created, and sent out to all funeral homes in the United States.
Developing an honor guard could be a very positive development for your community and for your business. The Momence Honor Guard has been producing military rites for 10 years and has had over 100 students participating in this honor gaurd.
